The Three Key Considerations to PeopleSoft Update Manager
Prior to the latest PeopleSoft 9.2 release, typical maintenance to fix bugs and avoid critical issues included applying patches, bundles and maintenance packs supplied by Oracle, to keep the application updated. If your systems are not current you will find it difficult, costly, and time consuming when you need to apply an important patch or fix.
But now users have a new way to deal upkeep in the new version -- one that makes maintenance significantly easier. With PeopleSoft 9.2, the process has changed to a Selective Adoption model using the PeopleSoft Update Manager (PUM) to keep PeopleSoft 9.2 applications up to date.
PeopleSoft Update Manager (PUM) is a new lifecycle management process aimed to help customers stay current on application patching and reduces the cost of application maintenance. The key take away is it’s only available for PeopleSoft 9.2 applications and requires a good understanding of the overall process.
Staying current on an application release and maintenance schedule will greatly simplify the steps involved in applying a fix and reduces the time required to do so. Performing regular maintenance of your PeopleSoft applications allows you to:
Stay compliant on tax and regulatory compliance
Fix critical functional issues
Obtain performance or functional enhancements
Minimize the difficulty in applying a future fix (or future upgrade)
Avoid known issues
Apply critical security fixes (CPU fixes)
Here are three key concepts to understanding the PeopleSoft Update Manager:
PeopleSoft Update Images
PeopleSoft Update Images are an entire snapshot image of the PeopleSoft application, similar to a Demo database. Oracle started delivering pre-configured PeopleSoft Images that contain all of the latest patches, fixes, and newest features and enhancements of the software. You will be required to download the latest image and apply it to an Oracle Virtual Box server. This PeopleSoft Image will serve as the master source environment (Similar to a Demo Database) which contains the most current objects and patches. You will use this image as the source environment for creating custom change packages that you can apply your production environments.
PeopleSoft Update Manager Uses Virtual Box to run the PeopleSoft Internet Architecture
PeopleSoft images require the Oracle VM Virtual Box hypervisor software. Oracle VM VirtualBox (formerly Sun VirtualBox, Sun xVM VirtualBox and Innotek VirtualBox) is a hypervisor for x86 computers from Oracle Corporation. You will need a physical server to run Virtual Box. Once installed, you can apply the image which will enable an entire PeopleSoft environment including the Database, Application Server, Process Scheduler, and Web Server needed to access PeopleSoft. Additionally, when installed you can search for the required patches/fixes for your application using PeopleSoft Update Manager PIA Application. The PUM application is a patch searching tool and custom change package generator. With this tool, you will be able to selectively pick and choose the specific updates you need and create a customized change package to apply to your production application.
In the old maintenance model, you had to take an entire maintenance pack or bundle whether you wanted it or not causing a tremendous amount of regression testing. With the new model, you can control the scope of change by selectively adopting exactly what you need, when you need it. This alone will greatly reduce the overall costs associated with ongoing maintenance
PeopleSoft Change Assistant
Similar to the way maintenance packs and bundles were applied in prior versions of PeopleSoft, version 9.2 along with the PeopleSoft Update Manager will require you to use the Change Assistant application to apply the customized packages that you create using PeopleSoft Update Manager.
The Change Assistant application can be used to generate change packages, compare the changes with your production environment, and will alllow you to apply the package to your PeopleSoft environments.
These are the main three concepts that you must know and understand with respect to the PeopleSoft Update Manager. The new Selective Adoption model along with the PeopleSoft Update Manager will give you the ability to smooth out the entire maintenance cycle, reduce costs, and give you a finer level of control.
