How 3 Companies Maximized Their Applications With the Cloud

Many of our customers are at a point in their digitization journeys where they want more from their applications and cloud deployments—more functionality, more stability, more security, and more reliability.

Achieving these cloud benefits, however, often comes with a few challenges. Roadblocks like lack of expertise, budget, or resources make it hard for companies to truly realize the full potential of their core applications and public cloud environments. Velocity’s Cloud Managed Infrastructure, Cloud Managed Database, and Cloud Disaster Recovery offerings were developed to take that burden off our customers and help optimize efficiencies, reduce costs, and improve resiliency in the public cloud.

Still, each business, application, workload, and database has a journey of its own. This means there’s no one-size-fits-all approach for digital transformation. That’s why we’re sharing our experience helping 100+ customers tap into the full power of the cloud—to help others benefit from lessons learned as they begin their own digitization journeys.

Our “Real Cloud Success Stories” series explores real-life stories of our customers’ journeys to the cloud. In this blog post, we share how three different businesses implemented our Cloud Managed Infrastructure, Cloud Managed Database, and Cloud Disaster Recovery offerings to innovate more, drive value, and deliver the best possible customer experiences.

1. How a Craft Beverage Software Business Took Control to Innovate More with Cloud Managed Infrastructure

When a craft beverage software business built its proprietary management software, they tapped into their own resources to make it happen. As an independent software vendor, their team of developers not only built the software but also oversaw the ongoing optimization. When their customer base expanded over the years, however, so did the need for a more scalable, cost-effective solution. Self-managing their current environment had become cost-prohibitive and time-consuming.

Velocity was tapped to re-design their existing monolithic AWS environment to a modern scalable, durable, and resilient two-tier architecture platform. Through our Cloud Managed Infrastructure offering, Velocity manages the independent software vendor’s cloud environment on AWS, providing around-the-clock support and AWS Enterprise support to their customer-facing applications.

After re-designing their cloud environment on AWS and executing ongoing management and optimization, the business now has more freedom to redeploy its resources and focus on core business strategies, like ongoing software innovation and development, improved software performance, and customer satisfaction.

2. How an Information Services Provider Realized Lower Costs and Better Performance with Cloud Managed Database

As a leading provider of  internet services delivering specialized content to education, healthcare, and other niche markets, this company needed more flexibility from its core offering. Operating on an on-premises SQL Server, their offering lacked the scalability and accessibility they needed. As a result, they explored a cloud-based managed SQL Server offering on AWS, along with options to bring their own licenses. However, this was no longer an option with Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS), and re-buying licenses through the RDS LI offering would have cost millions of dollars in incremental cost.

Through our Cloud Managed Database offering, Velocity moved the company’s critical SQL Server workloads to AWS. The company overcame its SQL Server software licensing constraints with Velocity’s Bring-Your-Own-License (BYOL) model. And today, Velocity’s Cloud Managed Database offering delivers them the flexibility they wanted via EC2, and the database management extensibility they required to provide their core product to the market efficiently and at scale.

This ultimately helped them achieve a lower total cost of ownership (TCO) and service level agreements (SLAs) that going directly through AWS couldn’t offer.

3. How a Global Provider of Home Comfort and Security Solutions Safeguarded a $4.8 Billion Business With Cloud Disaster Recovery

When a global provider of home comfort and security solutions completed a spin-off in late 2018, changes to their IT infrastructure soon followed. Part of this spin-off meant the company needed to invest and set up a new on-premises data center to house their core applications. But with the new on-premises data center came a strong need for a modern disaster recovery solution to safeguard their investment and ensure resiliency. The company knew a cloud-based solution would be the most efficient way to get there.

Due to the complex nature of its on-premises applications, however, they faced internal resource challenges to properly manage, test, and execute a cloud-based disaster recovery solution on their own.

Our dedicated experts delivered a Cloud Disaster Recovery solution through AWS Cloud Endure to support high availability and complete recoverability of the company’s mission-critical workloads. The Cloud Disaster Recovery solution gave the company a flexible solution to replicate critical data and infrastructure in the cloud in case of a disaster scenario. As a result, they gained high availability and 15-minute recovery times across their entire application landscape.
