JDE Upgrade Blog Series: Mastering the Upgrade Balancing Act with the JDE Simplified Upgrade for EnterpriseOne

The cost and time associated with upgrading is causing disruption and economic challenges for your team.

From healthcare to retail to financial services, high-priority, highly-visible IT projects drive competitive new services and innovation. The challenge for internal IT staff is staying on top of these priority projects while managing increasingly complex, multi-platform infrastructures.

For corporate IT directors, the management of infrastructure upgrades and the integration of technologies top the list of technical challenges. According to a Gartner IT Director’s Forum report: “Business applications need to be upgraded over time to let users take advantage of features in the newer versions or releases. However, businesses need to find the right balance between the speed of innovation of their vendors and their own needs….This will lead to more, but smaller projects enabling the idea of continuous innovation.”

Formulating Your Upgrade Strategy

With upgrades topping the IT issues list, it is more important than ever to collaborate with the JD Edwards Upgrade Team to assess IT readiness and determine what level of upgrade (i.e. feature/function, customization, etc.) is really needed and the time/labor/cost required:

At the same time, it is essential to pro-actively plan and prepare how to avoid common pitfalls like:

  • Poorly documented processes

  • Scope/budget creep due to customizations

  • Failure to keep the software constant during the upgrade

  • Assuming your internal tech people can pick up 15 years of experience in a couple of weeks

Solution: The Simplified Upgrade Process for JD Edwards EnterpriseOne

JDE offers a fast-track upgrade path streamlining processes around retrofitting, updates and training in 100 days or less. Upgrade your JDE EnterpriseOne application for:

  • Lower Risk: Control when to upgrade, and what to change
  • Lower Costs: With fewer customizations needed, you only need to test what you changed
  • Higher Value: Stay current and competitive with latest innovations

Who Can Take Advantage of the Simplified Upgrade Process?

Organizations running JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.1 or 9.0.2 can take advantage of this simplified upgrade. According to Oracle, approximately 60%+ of JD Edwards EnterpriseOne customers are running on either 9.0 or 9.1.

The majority of those users will be able to select the simplified upgrade process.

If you are not currently on 9.1 or 9.0.2, the new simplified upgrade process is one of many new capabilities available post-upgrade and should be included as a primary upgrade driver along with security updates, FASB/IASB revenue recognition changes, mobile applications, internet of things, hybrid cloud integrations, industry solutions and new tools for modernizing the user experience.

How is the Simplified EnterpriseOne Upgrade Different from the Traditional EnterpriseOne Upgrade

The Simplified EnterpriseOne Upgrade requires a much smaller number of objects than a traditional upgrade.

While the old process replaced all of the objects in the central objects data source, only about 25% of objects need updating in an existing install between 9.1 and 9.2.

Simplified Upgrade retains the previous object specifications for the path code to be upgraded. With the data source left intact, the specification merge process only merges updated, added and removed objects that have also been changed in the new release.

This means the post-upgrade retrofit of customizations is only needed for the subset of objects that had been customized and then modified again by the upgrade, saving time, resources, and accelerating time to value.
