CIOs of the Future
We were recently talking with a healthcare CIO at one of our Customers who was approaching a transition in his career. As he looked back over his tenure, being invited by the business to lead and discuss business process improvements that had nothing to do with I.T. stood out to him as the highlight of his experience.
This is not unique. Today’s CIOs are influencing business process decisions. Whether they be purchasing processes, supply chain processes, or financial reporting strategies, the successful CIOs of today are leading business transformation. These innovative CIOs are greatly influenced by millennials who are more comfortable carrying a conversation between avatars than they are participating on a conference call. Today’s CIOs are influenced by the instant gratification of having complex applications that work instantly upon download on their tablet and phone and they are empowering the business by pushing more corporate systems to interact with these mobile devices.

These best practices consist of resilient processes that lead to reliable outcomes at a predictable costs. At this intersection, companies can stretch themselves to become market leaders.
Yet, at this intersection, the weakest link in the chain is the supervisor. Some economists would argue that the primary growth limitation in any economy is the varied skill and execution of mid-level supervisors in business.
Businesses invest less and less in training their managers and supervisors. Often, individual contributors are promoted to supervisory roles not because they have leadership skills but because they are a good individual contributor. The success of today’s companies is limited by the training level and performance at the mid level supervisor.
